Dual Carbon Battery とは 何か？？
Dual Carbon batteries: Is this finally the breakthrough we’ve been promised for so long?
One of the dirty little secrets of the green automotive industry is that its most defining and important component, the battery, really isn’t very green at all.
Modern batteries tend to poop out more quickly than just about any other part of the car, and when they die they must be disposed of carefully to avoid harming the environment.
Now, a star-studded Japanese startup called Power Japan Plus (PJP) promises to fix that problem — literally, it promises that this technology will revolutionize the world of battery technology.
If its basic claims for the breakthrough are true, that actually seems to be a fair bet; the so-called Ryden Dual Carbon Battery could greatly extend the length of a charge and the overall lifetime of a battery, while greatly reducing cost, charge times, and environmental impact.
The Dual Carbon battery, so named for the fact that both the anode and cathode are made of carbon, could give a modern electric vehicle a range of almost 500 kilometers (300 miles), which puts it in a class with the highest-end battery in Tesla’s Model S. Despite its impressive energy density,
it can charge up to 20 times faster than modern lithium-ion batteries — that fact alone will make the Ryden battery of extreme interest to electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, as they struggle to keep up with Tesla and its supercharging stations.
Don’t worry that you’ll wear out the battery with those quick charges either, as PJP claims its technology can take at least 3000 discharge cycles before beginning to degrade.
Maybe the biggest number associated with this battery, though, is zero: a dual-carbon battery experiences zero temperature change during operation.
This not only makes the batteries potentially much safer for long-term use, but removes the need for complex, expensive, and space-consuming battery coolant systems.
Further, since they will not short circuit when totally discharged, they can be run for longer to theoretically extend battery life even more.
As mentioned, Ryden Dual Carbon Batteries use carbon as both the anode and cathode, with an as-yet-unidentified organic electrolyte containing lithium ions.
Using carbon has numerous benefits, not the least of which is cost; little is known about the chemistry of the carbon used at both ends of this battery, but we do know that PJP claims it’s made from, of all things, cotton fibers.
it is patented and does not seem to make the electrodes any harder on the environment. The Dual Carbon battery should be easily recyclable and environmentally safe upon disposal.
We don’t currently know what treatment will be necessary to make an anode or cathode out of cotton carbon, but whatever the technique, it is patented and does not seem to make the electrodes any harder on the environment.
